Cheesies

Given our close proximity, I often time find myself accompanying my Mother to the grocery.  Why you ask? Why not?  Even as an adult, I still manage to 'sneak' things into the grocery cart and when they make their way onto the conveyor at check-out, she just looks at me and laughs.   On the other hand, there are things that make their way into our grocery bags that most definitely should not be there.

Take cheesies for example.  Depending on where you are, the item I am describing may be called cheese puffs, cheese curls or cheesy puffs.  In our family, they are simply 'cheesies.'  

Cheesies were my step-dad's favorite and I am addicted.  I do not buy them because I will eat the entire bag in one sitting and end up being painted in 'Trumpface;' not a becoming look on anyone.  Since my step-dad  passed over four years ago, my Mom has not purchased them...    until recently.

I spotted the bag on top of the fridge - obviously where all the bad snacks are kept because they are right in your face and easily accessible.  Why open the fridge and try to find a veg to eat when you can simply reach up...  top of the fridge snack it is because we're lazy. 

So I ask my Mom, why did you buy cheesies?  She replied that they were on sale.  Another family trait: even if you don't need something but you buy it because it was on sale.  We're geniuses I tell you. 

So what happened to the cheesies you ask, well we polished off the bag and I was hopeful that was the end of the cheesie purchasing.   Until two more bags showed up the next week.

"Mom! I told you last time you bought these, please do not buy them again!"    

"Shoot. I forgot.  But they were on sale again so I bought you a bag for your place too."

"Mom, seriously, please do not buy them anymore.  You know I can't stop eating them once I start."  And I'm happy to say my bag of cheesies fed the local squirrels while my Mom's bag is still on top of the fridge.

Today, we were at the grocery together. We went separate ways as she sent me on a couple errands to other stores, so she was shopping unsupervised.  I finished my errands and started to search for her in the grocery.  I find her at the check out, already paying, and what do I see... two bags of cheesies!!!!

I hadn't said a word as I approached but the cashier could see I was not happy.

"MOM!  Cheesies! Really?!?!"

"What??"

"Mom, if I was addicted to crack would you buy that for me too???" 

She just looked at me, shrugged and laughed.   

The 16 year old cashier tried to not laugh and stopped bagging the groceries because the only things left to pack up were the cheesies and she wanted to stay out of it.  Poor kid.  

Needless to say, the two bags of cheesies are on top of the fridge and I am resolving myself to willpower...    

Let's face it, the cheesies will be gone within a week and I hope to return to a cheesie-free zone at my Mother's moving forward.
